Welcome to our new Trustee, Jennie Hurley

We were delighted to welcome Jennie to our Board in August 2020. Jennifer Hurley retired recently after a forty-year career in nursing. Jennie was the first Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Accident and Emergency at University College Hospital.

Jennie worked for the second part of her career in Primary Care with an Advanced Diploma in Chronic Disease Management. Most of her work involved the management and monitoring of patients with long term medical conditions, and monitoring of people aged 65 and over, including assessment at home for people with dementia and their family carers. She also worked with colleagues on initial cognitive assessment and referral to memory services.

Jennie was the elected nurse representative on the governing body of the Islington Clinical Commissioning Group with clinical lead responsibility for Last Years of Life Care and Learning Disability and Autism. As one of the early Nurse Prescribers, she also chaired the Non-Medical Prescribers’ Forum and was a member of the Medicines Optimisation Committee. She has a special interest in care of people with dementia in their family home.

Jennie says: "My Dad, Edward, had Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia. I had a direct experience of how dementia affected him and those of us who loved and cared for him.My mother looked after him at home as long as she could in most challenging circumstances, twenty four hours a day, with help only from friends and family.I am delighted that as a trustee of Hope for Home I am able to work with a wonderful group of fellow trustees. Together with them I feel I can contribute to projects and initiatives which help and support those caring for loved ones with dementia at home: often a hidden group in our society."

Support for St Clare Hospice in Harlow

Hope for Home has provided specialist training for St Clare hospice volunteers as they embark upon a new support programme for unpaid carers of people with dementia at home. Hope for Home enjoys a long term relationship with St Clare’s having provided free advice and support to help them to secure finds for their new community project.

Inner Wheel Margate supports Hope for Home

In February 2021 Sarah Burnard, one of our Trustees, was asked to address a meeting of the Inner Wheel, Margate. This group has very kindly offered to try to raise money for Hope for Home once Covid restrictions are eased.
